Go Fast Games 2010 Cancelled / September 16, 2010

This event has unfortunately been cancelled.

This year the Royal Gorge Go Fast Games will be held

Friday September 16th, through Sunday, September 19th,
2010, at the world's highest suspension bridge - the 1,053-foot-high Royal Gorge Bridge in south-central Colorado.  Due to the technical nature of the Royal Gorge, participation in this event is by invitation only.

The Go Fast Games will include a number of extreme sporting activities but
the principal event will once again be B.A.S.E. jumping from the bridge.
Depending on weather conditions, jumping will go every day from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
All participating jumpers should be expert canopy pilots with equivalent or
better-than-USPA PRO rating accuracy skills (standup landings, ten times in
a row, inside a five-meter circle).

Why? Because the Gorge is less than 100 feet wide at the bottom at its
narrowest point and there's almost nowhere to land except on nasty boulders
or in the icy, fast-moving Arkansas River -- and only there in limited spots
because half of the riverbed is protruding boulders anyway, especially in September when the water is low.

The primary landing area will be an area approximately 50 feet wide by 90
feet long next to the railroad tracks (the same area as previous years).  This area is
mostly level pea-gravel.  There are a few small rocks and debris at the edges of
this landing area.  The secondary landing area will be along the
railroad tracks themselves. The railroad tracks are heavily contaminated
with soot, oil, tar, grease and other parachute-unfriendly materials.

The Arkansas River is fairly shallow, fast-moving water filled with
boulders.

Its upstream end is bordered by telephone poles and cross-wires. Downstream
it is more wide-open but still dotted with large boulders and rapids. Its
landing side border is a steeply inclined cement slab; its far-side border is a
steep rocky slope about 20 feet high that first flattens at an old wooden
aqueduct, and then climbs vertically for several hundred feet.

The "outs" are considered hostile terrain. Because the canyon's so narrow at
the bottom, jumpers can't turn much when they get down low; they have to commit
pretty high to a planned landing area.  The preferred method of bleeding off too
much altitude to avoid overshooting the landing area is a deep brake
approach opposed to s-turns or shashaying.

Wall strikes.  If jumpers delay more than five seconds and have a 90 left or
right, especially with line twists, they can hit the wall. This is important: at the
Royal Gorge Bridge, jumpers can have a wall strike if they're not totally
on it after opening.

The Winds.  Finally, there are the winds. It is generally somewhat calm in
the canyon during the early morning and post-sunset hours, but that's not when
we'll be jumping. During the course of the day, the winds come and go and
blow at anywhere from 5 to 20 miles per hour. Moreover, the various buttresses,
protrusions and meanderings of the canyon create vortices and turbulence
that can make for challenging canopy rides.  The first year, we went on one wind
hold for about 15 minutes the entire event, the last two years, we were winded
on several occasions. Let's hope this is an off year for the winds.

Water safety personnel will be on duty for water landings, and there will be
medical personnel onsite.

Jumpers will be REQUIRED to wear helmets and standard hard knee armor. Elbow and
torso armor are optional but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  In other words, battle gear is a good idea.

jumpers may bring and jump as many rigs as they have. Equipment must be
site-specific and must pass inspection by Parachuting Event Directors Jimmy and
Marta Pouchert.  All rigs MUST have a 3-ring cutaway system in the event of a water landing.

Please read this next section carefully:

Any invitee who demonstrates technical, professional or public relations
skills that are not up to speed with the technical environment and the social venue
will be immediately suspended from further jumping and sent away from the
premises. No appeals, no excuses, and no refunds.

Also:

It came to our attention that a few jumpers who attended two years ago had
less than 100 BASE jumps.  They must have at least 100 BASE jumps to attend this
event and they must be current.  If we find out that anyone has less than 100
BASE jumps and is jumping, they will be suspended from jumping and will
seriously jeapordize their future at this event.  In addition, the
experienced jumper who recommended them for this event will also be forbidden to
attend this event in the future and will lose their access immediately.  We are
doing this for their protection and the protection of the event.

Those who have been invited have demonstrated generally good
judgment and maturity over their jumping career.  They are now being asked to
exercise that good judgment and maturity in determining whether they’re
really up to jumping at this event, which may well be the most challenging
landing environment ever faced.

Have fun, stay safe and see you at the 2010 Royal Gorge Go fast Games.
